This mini-symposium aims to offer a venue to discuss, appreciate and evaluate the impact of software engineering methods and computing tools in the implementation and delivery of modern Environmental Decision Support Systems.

19th IMACS World Congress Mini-symposium
Advances in Environmental Software

Convenors: Andrea Rizzoli and Ioannis Athanasiadis

Understanding the complex relationships between humans and the environment is becoming more and more important. The efficient and sustainable management of environmental systems is essential to provide essential services such as water, for drinking and irrigation, preserving ecosystem diversity, guaranteeing food security, and an acceptable air quality, to name a few. As the scale of the challenge is rising, the need for sound methodological approaches to assist environmental managers is strong as ever, and environmental decision support systems (EDSS) can package and deliver such approaches.

Software systems have made huge progress in the last decade, and EDSSs are taking advantage of that progress. In this mini-symposium we want to discuss, appreciate and evaluate the impact of software engineering methods and computing tools in the implementation and delivery of modern EDSS. Topics include distributed and cloud computing, social computing, crowdsourcing, the semantic web and ontologies, open linked data, big data and non-SQL databases, GPU and parallel computing, advanced visualization techniques, agile programming and domain-specific languages, and their use in environmental software applications

ISESS, the International Symposium on Environmental Software Systems, was initiated in 1995 as a forum to present and discuss the fundamentals, progress and actual trends in this area in terms of methods, tools and state-of-the-art environmental informatics applications. Over the years, it has also evolved into an important networking tool for academics, environmental professionals, and other interested parties.

ISESS is a conference series organized on behalf of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), WG 5.11 “Computers and Environment”. In odd-numbered years, ISESS is held as a conference with a complete range of topics related to Environmental Information Systems (EIS) and related topics. In even-numbered years ISESS is held as a workshop of International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software (IEMSS) with the focus being on a specific topic. The 2013 conference is organised by the Austrian Institute of Technology in cooperation with IFIP, the European Commission and the European Environment Agency. The conference will be held on October 9-11, 2013, in Hotel Wende, Neusiedl am See (close to Vienna), Austria.

ISESS 2013 Proceedings will be published in electronic form in the series IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology of Springer and is included to SCOPUS.
